Heating Tips for Holiday Parties

Dec 30, 2019 | Furnace, Heating, Winter

You plan everything just right for this time of year. You wrap your presents for your loved ones with festive wrapping paper. You decorate your house with festive lighting and lawn ornaments. You put up a Christmas tree and decorate it as well. You buy the best food for the most significant meals of the year. You send out invitations. You try to cover every detail to make sure everyone is happy. But what about your home’s heating system? How much have you considered that?

We at Delaware Heating and Air applaud the lengths to which you go to make your holiday parties memorable. There is a lot involved. And because it gets so cold this time of year, you strive to ensure your house is warm and welcoming for you and your party guests. Strangely enough, cooking and baking during the holidays, combined with a home full of guests, can make your place unseasonably hot without taking some important considerations.

To guarantee your home has the perfect temperature to accommodate all your guests’ satisfaction this holiday season, we at Delaware Heating and Air composed the following tips:

Holiday Heating Tips

  1. Have a technician perform a regular maintenance check-up on your system. While your home’s system is likely keeping you and your family cozy now without a problem in sight, this is an excellent way to avert any future breakdowns or disruptions in service. No one wants to scramble for heat days before they’re expecting a home full of guests, let alone any time when the weather is cold outside. Routine check-ups, believe it or not, save you money in the long run.
  2. Keep an eye on the areas around your space heaters, other heating devices, and furnace vents. Keep in mind, as guests appear, these can easily get covered or blocked without you realize its happening.
  3. Rely on a programmable thermostat to automatically regulate your furnace and even set it to a lower temperature while you are cooking. Combine the heat from your holiday cooking with a home packed with bodies, and your home can get annoyingly hot. Think about it. Do you remember a time or two during a holiday party when the place got a little too toasty? It’s more common than you realize.
  4. Gather up some throw blankets and/or quilts to utilize during your party. Sofas, love seats, and recliners are the best place to arrange them. Lay them over these seating areas, making them visible for those guests who tend to be a little colder than the others. Utilizing them should deter these individuals from trying to adjust your thermostat to their comfort level.
  5. Consider cold foods and plan ahead to prep certain foods ahead of time. Another approach is to arrange for some guests to cook and bring certain dishes, if feasible. This should limit all that last-minute cooking that can heat the house.
  6. If your home is equipped with a safe and working fireplace, fire it up for your party! Lit fireplaces increase the holiday spirit and give off great heat that’ll allow you to keep your thermostat down. They can also save you money, which we could all use more of this time of year.
  7. Tightly close, latch, and lock all the windows in your place. Not only will this form a better seal to prevent air from going through, but it also should discourage visitors from cracking a window if they find it is getting excessively warm inside.
  8. “Whole home humidifiers” are great tools for holiday parties. Not only do they help your home retain heat, but they also increase comfort levels and eliminate dry air. Between the heating benefits and the elimination of dry air, this is a great way to ensure your guests’ satisfaction.
  9. Adjust the settings on your ceiling fans and utilize them during your party. What are we talking about? Most ceiling fans incorporate a “reverse” switch that will propel the naturally ascending warm air back down towards the floor level. Reversing your ceiling fans also assists your home’s heating system in keeping the temp right while circulating air and keeping an evenly warm home.
  10. Are you having your party in only certain parts of your home? Space heaters are a great way to even out the heat, keep your thermostat down and save you money. If this is the case, you might also close off rooms and areas of your house you aren’t going to use. Close doors. Hang up blankets in hallways and staircases to discourage guests from wandering off while keeping the heat where you need it most. To enhance the holiday atmosphere, if fancied, find one that imitates a fireplace.
  11. Inspect your furnace’s filter before your big party and, if it’s even a little dirty, change it.
